Island in the Future / Visual Assembly: between playground and Museum

11 April, 2025

The Visual Assembly in Saint Vincent will be the second part of the one held in June 2024. Back then, we came up with many ideas, some of which had to be adjusted because of the hurricane that hit just two days after the DGI group left the island.

This year, as part of the Institute’s program, we have invited a remarkable guest, Alastair Parvin (check out his TED talk). Together, we will explore architecture made by people, for people—rethinking how our shared and private spaces could be designed, built, and maintained.

Afterward, we will hold a second part of the Visual Assembly to explore the relationship between the Museum of Care (which we plan to create on an abandoned ship) and the playground—both as shared spaces for creativity and care.

We will ask:

  • Can public spaces serve as environments for care and mutual aid?
  • In what ways can a community be involved in building, inhabiting, and sustaining these places?
  • Could public spaces serve as an international stage, attracting cultural practitioners from around the world, while also being truly useful for the local community?

We will soon begin preparing for the construction of the playground, which will progress further during our next DGI visit to Saint Vincent from October 5–10
