‘How we took thank you and turned it into screw you’?
The Museum of Debt Room aims to foster collaboration and discussion in order to realize the world’s first museum exploring debt in a social, anthropological and cultural context. The room builds on the Museum of Debt website, begun in 2021 by three friends who were inspired by David Graeber’s monumental historical and anthropological analysis of debt (Debt. The First 5000 years). The Museum of Debt aims to take a satirical, even absurdist view of the problem of debt in order to set it apart from more traditional resources, which typically focus solely on money or coinage or the phenomenon of foreign debt.

2025/2026 is a significant date for those interested in debt in the UK. The UK Government has said that it will sell the remaining shares the taxpayer owns in the failed banking system ‘by 2025/2026.’ Despite the rhetoric at the time, it’s clear that the taxpayer will not see a return on its investment and that the banks successfully shifted the risk from their sector to the taxpayer.
Currently the Museum of Debt exists as a repository of artifacts and responses to the issue of debt in the form of videos, games and potential exhibit items. It is hoped that these resources and others inspired through discussion in this room can form the basis of a future collection for the museum.
