This is a room about Carnivals for David and carnivals for all of us, which we hope will repeat again and again. Carnivals not bound to place, freely spreading across the earth. We want to create a liberating virus of festivity. We want to print Carnivalesque money that doesn’t accumulate. We want Carnivalesque birth and carnival death as the great cycle of renewal. We dream of carnival art, where we are all counterfeiters and pirates, where there is no separation between creators and spectators. Of carnival education, where hierarchies are inverted so we can see the world anew. Let carnival never end—not as a permanent celebration, but as an infinite cycle of temporary revolutions, each time renewing the world anew.
Celebrating David Graeber’s life and work together with Kibera Art District Art Parade through art, exchange, and collective joy.
We were all masks, and we were all people, united through the death and laughing in its face.
What’s happening:
Artists from Kibera Art District’s 37 studios and international participants create collective necklaces, organize workshops, sew costumes and flags for the carnival. We experiment with social currency, funding collective art projects, loans against artworks, and multi-stage international exchanges.
How to participate:
December 2024: monthly online meetings for discussion and planning
Spring-Summer 2025: workshops, exchanges, exhibitions
2026: carnival production, rehearsals
October 2026: carnival in Kibera
Join at any stage. Let’s celebrate together.
Here are notes from our working meetings. If you want to join our next meeting, please, write to us.
